Tweed

Tweed Day! | A versatile fabric for the Nigerian Wardrobe

Did you know there’s a day dedicated to tweed? Ever heard of it? Yes? No? April 3rd marks National Tweed Day in honor of the fabric. On this day, we’ll talk about how this versatile fabric can elevate your Nigerian style.

What is tweed?

Tweed fabric is made from wool and has a rough, textured feel. You can think of it as a warm, sturdy material for keeping you snug during the harmattan or cooler evenings in regions like Jos or Mambilla Plateau, where temperatures can drop significantly. It is also useful for transitional seasons, like the brief period between the rainy and dry seasons when the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional cool breezes and cloudy skies. It comes in lots of different colors and patterns and is popular today for making jackets, vests, suits, and more.

How did we end up here?

There has been a debate as to the origin of this day. One theory proposes that this day is celebrated because of a man named William ‘Boss’ Tweed, born on April 3, 1823. Another one suggests that it originated in Scotland, and expanded to England, Ireland, Wales, and finally Britain during the 1830s. Despite the varying theories, today has come to be celebrated in honor of the fabric itself.

What are the types available?

Tweed comes in various types based on the region where it’s produced, the type of wool used, and the weaving techniques employed. Some types include Harris, Donegal, Saxony, Cheviot, and Shetland tweed. Shetland, in comparison to other types, is soft and lightweight, making it perfect for milder weather like we have in Nigeria. Also, it has moisture-wicking properties that allow it to absorb moisture without feeling damp and can be beneficial during Nigeria’s rainy season or in humid conditions to keep you dry and comfortable. So if you’ll be trying out any of the material types I mentioned, consider Shetland.

Different ways it can be incorporated into Nigerian style

In Nigeria, due to the predominantly hot weather conditions in the country, people tend to opt for lighter fabric options like cotton instead of tweed. Therefore, it has become a rare staple in Nigerian wardrobes, primarily due to the misconception that, since it is made of thick materials, it is only suitable for making jackets and coats for colder regions of the world. But as I mentioned, Shetland is a lighter version of the tweed family and can be incorporated into your style. Let me show you how.
